The video was demonstrated on screens during Russian President Vladimir Putin's address to the Federal Assembly at the Manezh Central Exhibition Hall in Moscow, Russia, 01 March 2018 (reissued 28 December 2019). Russian Defense Minister Shoygu announced on 27 December 2019, that the first regiment of Avangard hypersonic missiles have been put into service at an undisclosed location, suggesting the Urals, without providing further details. President Putin, who unveiled images of the new weapon in 2018, said that the nuclear-capable missiles can travel more than 20 times the speed of sound. Il capo di stato maggiore delle forze armate russe, Valery Gherasimov, ha informato Putin del test “riuscito” di un missile ipersonico da crociera Tsirkon. Il missile, secondo il generale, è stato lanciato dalla fregata Admiral Gorshkov, dislocata nel Mar Bianco, verso un obiettivo marittimo nel Mare di Barents. Il missile, secondo Gharasimov, ha volato per oltre 450 chilometri a un’altezza massima di 28 chilometri, “il volo è durato quattro minuti e mezzo” ed “è stata raggiunta la velocità ipersonica di oltre 8 mach”.
L’annuncio nel giorno in cui Putin compie 68 anni.
